Gautrain – Underground coverage solution
Namibia’s second mobile network required a rapid rollout in 2007, which included 128 Greenfield sites comprising of rooftops, mobile and 60 metre tower sites. RNS, was contracted as the nominated site build contractor, designed, supplied and installed all radio sites across Namibia as per the agreed roll out schedule. RNS was also responsible for the design of specialised quick deployment screwpile sites as part of the supply.
RNS in collaboration with Axell Wireless designed, supplied and implemented a safety radio network in the tunnels and underground stations. To meet the high reliability requirements and safety standards of the project, RNS deployed a radiating cable (Leaky Feeder) system in the tunnels.
The system is interlinked to the remote master control unit and 22 remote station and emergency shaft units via dual fibre optic cable feeds. The system design makes the network fully redundant and guarantees automatic fall-back in case of a fault. The system is flexible, easily extendable and can be adapted to new technologies and standards in the future.
